(Photo courtesy of the MET Opera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Climate protesters from the group Extinction Rebellion interrupted the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s opening performance of Tannha\u00fcser on November 30.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong> On November 30, climate protesters from the group <a href=\"https:\/\/rebellion.global\/\">Extinction Rebellion<\/a> interrupted Act II of Wagner\u2019s Tannha\u00fcser at the Metropolitan Opera. The group interrupted Wolfram\u2019s description of love as a miraculous spring, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IsiahMagsino\/status\/1730430452119257525?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1730430452119257525%7Ctwgr%5E6d73fcf41dc17190a948945d9f8843b2a3b791ca%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2023%2F12%2F01%2Farts%2Fmusic%2Freview-tannhauser-met-opera.html\">shouting from the audience, \u201cThe spring is tainted.\u201d Others held a banner reading \u201cNo Opera On A Dead Planet.\u201d<\/a> The Met\u2019s curtain was quickly lowered before security arrived. Met General Manager Peter Gelb apologized for the disturbance before the performance restarted, only to be quickly re-interrupted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refresher:<\/strong> The climate protests came in the middle of baritone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gerhaher.de\/index.php\/en\/menu\/biography\">Christian Gerharher<\/a>\u2019s Metropolitan Opera debut as Wolfram. Gerharher has been described as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/01\/arts\/music\/review-tannhauser-met-opera.html\">one of our finest living lieder singers<\/a>\u201d (NYTimes), who brings the subtlety of art song to his operatic depictions. The performance was conducted by Donald Runnicles in a 1970s production by Otto Schenck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digging deeper:<\/strong> Frenzy at performances of Wagner operas is far from unprecedented. In Alex Ross\u2019 2020 book <a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780374285937\/wagnerism\">Wagnerism: Art and Politics in the Shadow of Music<\/a>, Ross reports on numerous duels between Wagner-lovers and their opponents.
