(Photo: Ken Howard\/MET)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WCPE in North Carolina consulted listeners following their inclination not to broadcast the Met\u2019s six new operas this season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s Up:<\/strong> WCPE \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theclassicalstation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Classical Station<\/a>\u201d in North Carolina announced its concerns about airing the new operas being produced by the Metropolitan Opera this season. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benwritesthings\/status\/1707361326228549806\/photo\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a letter<\/a> to listeners, the station cited maintaining a relaxing, family-friendly listening experience as their principal concern. The station still plans to air the Met\u2019s productions of \u201ctime-tested and great\u201d operas Carmen, Le nozze di Figaro, Turandot, Madama Butterfly, Tannha\u00fcser and others.<\/p>\n<p>Going Deeper: WCPE described that airing \u201cdiscordant music\u201d or operas that feature adult themes in English would be upsetting to listeners.<\/p>\n<p>The operas they suggest skipping include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Dead Man Walking, the true story of Sister Helen Prejean counselling a man on death row, which includes depictions of rape and murder<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metopera.org\/season\/2023-24-season\/florencia-en-el-amazonas\/\">Florencia en el Amazonas<\/a>, the Met\u2019s first Spanish-language opera in a century, which is reportedly outside the station\u2019s listening bounds<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, based on the life of the eponymous civil rights leader, which features offensive language and adult themes<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Fire Shut Up in My Bones, the Met\u2019s first opera by a Black composer that premiered last season, for offensive language and themes<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">the Virginia Woolf-centred The Hours for scenes of suicidal contemplation<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">John Adams\u2019 El Ni\u00f1o because it uses non-biblical sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why It Matters:<\/strong> Those \u201ctime-tested\u201d operas may be less tested than the WCPE believes. Many opera lovers to this day take issue with the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/sensual-enchantment\/carmen-the-opera-romanticizes-violence-against-women-2b758098f5e8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">domestic violence prevalent in Carmen<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/schmooze\/149960\/tannhaeuser-and-the-jews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blatant antisemitism in Wagner\u2019s operas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/19\/opinion\/opera-racism-puccini.html?unlocked_article_code=Pa96T0nfDZSJndBX3hzD5rNxkQiD1lqS75oa19X1QGbZ6gGdfdYpAiQK0Shx2Fc1dxGvOdpoc-GUH2Z4UI-_PQSOjn0FbWQ_PGoxNxiVRI-tXyOR9WQxG3LCvs5O4bNNs5yFD2KcsKPyjjtIi22ZwCdxOLXu5Bd9AMqjT5kLn6w9jvxzaqMvuA12SsMeDCSltEhy3czJrb7h9DXJTeTE3Pu6J4ITtjd2W7v0yyc5xe1Lz3O5LyShlW6E96jneLUgFXfLCwpUj4zPjzT3mAJmxC4Rf5ez0QZjk3aGymj_g4sc187UfO2z6cmGM8nGLrGPmj0h5Nq_b5ThsvScPLs&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Puccini\u2019s problematic depictions of Asian cultures<\/a> in Turandot and Butterfly.
