Listening to Prokofiev\u2019s \u2018Classical\u2019 Symphony can make you feel vibrant and alive. Seeing poor Violetta sick in her bed in Verdi\u2019s\u00a0<em>La Traviata<\/em>\u00a0can make you feel tender and concerned.<\/p>\n<p>But how much music do you need to listen to before you start to feel different?<\/p>\n<p>That was one of the big questions the British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST) wanted to answer in their new study.<\/p>\n<h3>Most surprising results<\/h3>\n<p>The BAST&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishacademyofsoundtherapy.com\/musical-daily-allowance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Music as Medicine<\/a>&#8216;\u00a0study showed a &#8220;musical daily allowance&#8221; of just 13 minutes a day is all it takes to improve overall well-being and reduce anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n<h3>By the numbers<\/h3>\n<p>The study tested 7581 people and found that of their test group:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">90.15% used music to relax<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">81.80% to make them happy<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">46.5% to process and release sadness<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">32.53% to aid concentration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Looking deeper<\/h3>\n<p>According to the study, participants experienced increased creativity, better sleep quality, and improved mood after listening to music regularly.<\/p>\n<p>To maximize the benefits of music, the study suggests engaging in active listening, which involves focusing on the sounds and rhythms of the music without any distractions.
