Toronto City Opera has announced they have signed a framework agreement which includes collaborating with the Rossini Opera Festival to bring Rossini’s music to Toronto during the 2021-22 season.
Authentic Rossini
First established in 1980, the Rossini Opera Festival is held annually in August in Pesaro, Italy — the birthplace of the composer Gioachino Rossini.
What they’re saying: “This is an important day in the history of Toronto City Opera, and an achievement for opera and the arts in Toronto, Ontario and Canada,” said Toronto City Opera General Director, Richard Paradiso. “I am pleased that after two very difficult seasons because of the global phenomenon, this result has risen from my journeys.”
Looking ahead
Other possible collaborations include a simultaneous festival of Rossini in Toronto in partnership with the Rossini Opera Festival with productions from both companies — digital and in person, in August 2022.
Toronto City Opera will be holding a gala to launch the partnership, including “La Cucina di Gioachino Rossini — Rossini Gourmet”, an initiative of Aspes SpA to promote Italian cuisine in Fall 2021.
